Our History

Monticello Volunteer Fire Department was chartered in June of 1978. It was organized to serve the areas in the northwest portion of the county bordered on the east and southeast by the city limits of Statesville.

Financing for MVFD was arranged through the Farmer's Home Administration, and on February 20, 1979, P.S. West Construction signed a contract for a pre-fab open-span building. The interior of the building was completed by the people of the community and others who graciously donated time and materials.

A contract was also signed by Triad Fire Inc., for 2 vehicles, including a Grumman 1000-gallon capacity tanker. The chassis for the vehicles were purchased locally from Bell and Howard Chevrolet, and the trucks were delivered in the fall of 1979.
The department began operating in December of 1979, and on May 1st, 1980, the department received an ISO rating of 9.

Since formation of the department in 1978, Monticello has had only three Fire Chiefs. Their vast knowledge and excellent direction have contributed greatly to the success of our department. The first Chief was David Miller, who served for 1 ½ years. The second Chief was Jim Eidson, who served for the next 6 years. Wayne Mayberry took over the reins as Chief in 1986, and still serves today.
